El campo de la inteligencia artificial, llamado deep learning o machine learning, ha evolucionado de forma exponencial en los últimos años y está evolucionando el campo de la Biomedicina. La disponibilidad de cantidades enormes de información médica (big data), en particular imágenes, y el desarrollo de algoritmos para extraer patrones de información y tomar decisiones “inteligentes” a partir de los datos, están haciendo avanzar de forma muy rápida el diagnóstico y la estratificación de pacientes. Estudios recientes han demostrado la utilidad de aplicar inteligencia artificial para el diagnóstico de enfermedades como el cáncer, las enfermedades cardiovasculares y las retinopatías. En estos casos, los algoritmos han aportado resultados tan buenos o incluso mejores que los estándares establecidos por expertos. En este sentido, la agencia reguladora del medicamento americana (Food and Drug Administration, FDA) ha aprobado el uso de la inteligencia artificial en varios campos de la Medicina y es de esperar que estas técnicas tengan un efecto significativo en la práctica de la Medicina en el siglo XXI. En esta 11.a edición del ciclo de conferencias y debates en ciencias se cubren aspectos básicos de la inteligencia artificial y su aplicación a la Biomedicina. También se discute el futuro potencial de esta técnica en el campo clínico y los aspectos socioeconómicos que esta revolución tecnológica puede tener en la sociedad actual y futura. |

The field of artificial intelligence, called “deep learning” or “machine learning”, has evolved exponentially in recent years and is revolutionizing the Biomedicine field. The availability of huge amounts of medical information (“big data”), in particular images, and the development of algorithms to extract information patterns and make intelligent decisions from data are rapidly advancing the diagnosis and stratification of patients. Recent studies have demonstrated the usefulness of artificial intelligence for the diagnosis of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and retinopathies. In these cases, the algorithms have yielded results as good or even better than the standards set by experts. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of artificial intelligence in several Medicine fields; the hope is that these techniques will have a significant effect on the practice of Medicine in the 21st century. The 11th edition of these conferences and debates describes basic concepts in artificial intelligence and its application to Biomedicine, as well as discussing its potential for the future of Medicine and the socio-economic consequences that this technological revolution may have in current and future society. |
