Resumen: In the scope of the electronic identification and trust services (eIDAS) Regulation, this study analysed the market for eID and trust services and generated insights on how to increase the uptake of these solutions among European Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). A market analysis examining the perception of SMEs towards these solutions was conducted, with eight Member States examined in more detail. SME-specific drivers and barriers to their adoption were identified, as well as business processes where eIDAS solutions can be used. The findings reveal a significantly low level of awareness and use of eIDAS solutions by SMEs, demonstrating the need for awareness raising activities. Based on these insights, a pilot programme was designed to involve stakeholders in spreading awareness among SMEs across Europe. A communication toolbox was developed and piloted, showcasing concrete benefits of eIDAS solutions in digitising SMEs processes in order to encourage SMEs to explore these solutions further. The pilot was received positively by stakeholders and it was found that the materials can be used as a basis for further developing communication tools towards different sectors. In the future, SMEs should continue to be regarded as a key stakeholder in the promotion of eID and trust services.
